I’m not going to lie, I’m a total wellness nut. I’m always trying to find the next best thing to improve my health and wellness. In 2020, it was greens. In 2021, it was mindful eating habits. 2022 was the Pilates craze. But, none of these started from the inside out… until last year.

Last year, I discovered that temperature has a huge effect on your overall well-being. When your body is too hot or too cold, it can lead to negative health effects. Decreased body temperature can lead to behavioral and mood changes. Increased body temperature can cause irritation and discomfort, which in turn can affect your focus and sleep.

As someone who suffers from anxiety and loves to work out, I’m no stranger to sweats and hot flashes. However, when I learned this was the root cause of my long nights and irritability throughout the day, I knew I had to take charge.  I tried everything under the sun that would be a quick solution to feel more comfortable and connected to my body. Nothing worked until I discovered the Embr Wave

Neck wraps fade quickly

Remember when you were a kid and you would get overheated and your parents would throw a bag of frozen peas or water bottle on your neck to cool you down? Well, I still feel like I’m growing up (even if I’m well into adulthood), so I tried first what was familiar to me. Neck wraps resemble this familiar feeling.

A neck wrap just sits in the freezer and when it’s time to cool down, you take it out and place it on your neck. First, let me start with the things that did work for me. I chose a neck wrap that had soothing beads in it because overheating would make me feel stressed. The beads were satisfying and helped me relax. The immediate feeling of the wrap on my neck helped cool me down almost instantly.

It did work, but only temporarily. The neck wrap stayed cool for only 30 minutes, then I would have to pop it back into the freezer. If I got hot after putting it back in the freezer, I would have to wait an hour or more for it to get cool again. When I get overheated, the discomfort manifests in my chest, neck, and face. I will say that the cooling sensation seemed to spread to other parts of my body, but I was still left with the unwanted redness on my face and chest from the heat.

As someone who is always on the go and stays active, I need a cooling device that is accessible and portable. It needs to be long-lasting and convenient so that I can just pop it out in the gym or my car. It also wasn’t discrete. I couldn’t take it out at work or running errands if I wanted to. The neck wrap didn’t check these boxes.

Cold eye patches were relaxing…kind of

When I get overheated, I imagine myself in a spa with cool cucumbers over my eyes. Being overheated leaves me stressed, unable to focus, and irritable. So, for everyone’s sake, I’m sure they would want me to go to a spa too. Well, it’s not feasible, so I opted for the next best thing: cold eye patches.

Cold eye patches emulate the vibe of cold cucumbers on your eyes. When using them, I felt calmer, I felt the redness on my face drain, and it helped that the patches reduce the appearance of stress-induced bags under my eyes. Sometimes I can get headaches when I am overheated, so the patches targeted that sensitive area behind my eyes to mediate pain. Overall, they cooled me down and were relaxing, to an extent.

It wasn’t long after using them that I hated the idea of my eyes being covered. This meant that if I needed to cool myself down, I had to be stationary. I couldn’t be on the run or carry on with my tasks. And if I popped them out at work, I would look ridiculous so that was off the table. It wasn’t a quick solution. And similar to the neck wraps, the cold faded quickly due to the warmness of my skin. They aren’t portable or efficient for day-to-day temperature struggles.

I was contemplating an ice bath

As mentioned, I’m a wellness fanatic. 2023 was a year for another health craze: ice baths.

Ice baths pose a lot of health benefits. For workout lovers like me, they can help to decrease muscle soreness after a workout, decrease inflammation, and allow for muscle recovery. They are beneficial for circulation, lowering metabolism, and increasing energy. Ice baths can also increase mood, allow for better sleep, and reduce stress, aka all the things I need thanks to my hot flashes. And of course, they can lower your body temperature.

After seeing one of my favorite fitness influencers use this in their day-to-day routine, I was so close to biting the bullet, but then I got real about financials. Ice baths require a lot of commitment and upkeep. You can get inexpensive ice baths for around $60, but you are still paying for the ice. You would have to buy bags of ice every week, which can rack up pretty quickly.

Ice baths also require a routine. To reap the benefits, you should be using ice baths daily for 15 minutes. I’m a busy person. Sure, 15 minutes doesn’t seem long, but when your schedule is jampacked hour-to-hour it’s hard to commit to 15 minutes for an ice bath. Especially because there is more time on top of that 15 minutes dedicated to setting up, changing, and cleaning up. It requires dedication that I wish I had.

Though ice baths were appealing and have a lot of benefits. I was on the hunt for a solution that was compatible with my lifestyle. I didn’t want to have to change my routine to help my body temperature. I wanted to find relief that enhanced my routine.

The Embr Wave checked all my boxes

OK, at this point, I had a laundry list of requirements for the next cooling device I tried. I needed something portable, long-lasting, convenient, and of course, effective in cooling me down. I saw an ad for someone who uses the Embr Wave to help them with their menopause hot flashes. I’m not someone going through menopause, but I can relate to their feelings of stress and discomfort caused by hot flashes. I can relate to the heat disrupting my daily life and affecting my overall wellness and focus.

I saw the price of $299, or $20 a month for the Embrship Subscription, and at first thought it was a little expensive, but then I did the math. An ice bath would cost me $60 just for the base, then I would average around $126 per week on ice bags. So, in just two weeks, I would have already spent around the same price on ice. In reality, if the Embr Wave was going to cool me down over time, it truly was cost-effective at that price — so I bit the bullet.

The Embr Wave is a wearable thermal device that targets your inner wrist. This area is sensitive, so with a push of a button, the device sends a cooling sensation that spreads throughout your whole body. This immediately intrigued me because it was discreet, which is perfect for cooling me down while I’m on the go.

When I first received it, I loved how sleek the design was. You couldn’t tell it was a device to help manage temperature, unlike other portable products I have tried, such as fans. It was comfortable to wear, so it wouldn’t disrupt my daily routine.

On my first day wearing it, I wanted to go about my day-to-day life to put it to the test. I wore it to work where I often get overwhelmed which can cause me to sometimes get overheated. One look at my flooded inbox and the heat started. I clicked the button on the Embr Wave and immediately felt a cooling sensation. This cooled me down in a matter of minutes. In the past, I would have to look away from the computer to gather myself, but here I could stay focused on work and calm down.

Then, after work, I went for my daily workout, more specifically a HIIT workout. These workouts are fast-moving with little to no rest. At the end of the workout, I was, of course, sweating and overheating. I used my Embr Wave, which by the way held up even while sweating, and felt the cooling instantly. The redness in my face decreased and I felt recovered. Because I was able to cool off faster, my energy level post-workout was higher. Usually, I would be so drained from the heat that I would want to do nothing after, but now, I could continue with my day.

At the end of the day, I felt calmer and happier because for once, I didn’t have a day where I was embarrassed or irritated due to heat. I didn’t have to rush home just to get some sort of relief, the Embr Wave was accessible at all times. When it came to sleep, I used the companion app to start a sleep session so I could stay cool throughout the night. For the first time in weeks, I had a full night’s rest. The Embr Wave truly helped my whole system

Bottom Line

Sweating and overheating are normal, but feeling comfortable in your body is crucial to maintaining your overall wellness. A balanced temperature can help you focus, reduce stress, and get good sleep. I had to kiss a few frogs first, but I found the solution to maintaining this healthy balance with the Embr Wave. Where other ones faltered in not being discreet, portable, or accessible, the Embr Wave made up for it. It was extremely easy to use, was effective in cooling me down, and gave me the reins back on my wellness.

  1. I bought my first Embre Wave 3 years ago for horrible hot flashes. I can’t imagine life without it now. When it died, I bought 2 more. I’ll always keep an extra around! That’s how important it is to me!
