I don’t love when my Facebook feed is full of ads, but I do like discovering new products. And I have to admit, I’ve purchased a few good items that way. Don’t blame me, they make the ads pretty convincing. However, one product piqued my skepticism more than anything: The Embr Wave. The company says this thermal wearable device can help my hot flashes, especially for those of us going through menopause. My first instinct: “Yeah right.” Hot flashes are my No.1 enemy, so sure I would love to remedy them, but they are so pesky, sometimes I don’t think any product could make me feel more comfortable. And I really don’t want to take any more medicines/supplements.
But, I was curious to see what the hype was all about. My feed was flooded with people wearing their Embr Wave, which I have to admit looked sleek as an accessory. I decided I’d be the judge of this supposed hot flash device. There were two price options: $299 and $20/month. I wasn’t ready to fully commit, so I opted for the $20/month Embrship Subscription. Once it arrived, I tried to prove that it wasn’t worth the hype, but I’m here to say, it was.
What is the Embr Wave?
I know you’re probably thinking what I was thinking: What kind of magic can help with hot flashes?
The Embr Wave is a wearable cooling device. You wear it like a watch, but on the inside of your wrist. When you feel a hot flash coming on (which, if you’re in the same stage of life as I am, then you know they happen quite often), you press the dotted button on the side and the device works to start instantly cooling you down. On the Embr Labs website, the team states that the inner wrist contains a high amount of temperature-sensitive nerves called thermoreceptors. These make the inner wrist the perfect spot to cool or warm your whole body. Embr Labs actually patented the thermal sensations that deliver the waves of temperature to the wrist. The temperature regulation aspects might also help with sleep and travel. Or so they say.
I know a thing or two about hot flashes…
At my age, 51, hot flashes have become a part of my day-to-day life (a dreadful part, might I add). Even though I feel so confident in so many ways, these hot flashes bring me down. I want to enjoy this part of my life, but I feel like I can’t, and it feels like I’ve tried everything.
I’ve tried hormone therapy, which regulates the level of estrogen in your body. I was weary of taking a pill, so I went the patch route, but I didn’t notice immediate effects — and I’m impatient. I’ve tried all the hacks, like eating less spicy food and carrying a fan around with me. My fan has been effective, but I’m tired of everyone knowing that I’m having hot flashes. The thought of the Embr Wave being a discreet measure excited me, even though I was initially skeptical.
Time to test it out
My first point of hesitancy was how heavy or uncomfortable the accessory would be if I wore it throughout my daily activities, such as gardening and cleaning around the house. When I received the package, I was immediately excited about the Rose Gold color I picked. It was sleek and minimalistic, but that wasn’t enough to win me over. At this point, I also needed results.
I put the Embr Wave on, and my first thought was the stainless steel design was cool to the touch. But, as I’m not a watch wearer, having something on my wrist took some getting used to. However, after a few hours, I forgot it was even there. Also, while perusing the website, I noticed they sell comfort cases and nylon and leather bands, which you might benefit from if you’re someone with sensory struggles.
Hot flashes can vary.
The thing with hot flashes is that they are inconsistent. I could be lying down and then get hit with a wave of heat that causes me to shoot out of bed. Or, I could be at work and have to run to the bathroom to throw cold water on my face. They are utterly annoying and inconvenient. So, I was skeptical as to how a device could account for these unexpected moments of discomfort.
Just for fun, I tried the device as soon as I opened the package. After setting the Embr Wave up, I pressed the button (which is all you need to do to activate it) and felt the cooling right away — I was impressed. I immediately started playing around with the mobile app that comes with the device. I quickly realized that this app was a menopause-sufferer’s dream because you could customize the cooling levels and change the duration up to 9 hours for sleep.
The app also tracks patterns so you can see when you need the most relief throughout the day. Hot flashes are like an enigma to me — I really don’t understand them very well even though I experience them. So, I was excited about this feature. I’m not tech-savvy, but the app was user-friendly for someone my age.
You can adjust the time and intensity of your sessions to adapt to your needs. As someone who experiences hot flashes frequently, I put the cooling sessions on for five minutes with a higher intensity, so I could attempt to have immediate relief while also giving myself some time to really soak in the coolness. I enjoyed the customizability of the app. My hot flashes vary in intensity and length, so I appreciated that the Embr Wave understood this.
At hour 5, it happened.
I wasn’t expecting a hot flash to happen so quickly on my first day of wearing the Embr Wave, but as I said, hot flashes have a mind of their own. It was time for the real test.
I went over to my daughter’s house for dinner with her and her husband, as I normally do on Wednesday nights, and here comes the dreaded hot flash, the intense warmth of my neck and face. It had only been five hours since opening up the Embr Wave, so let’s see if it will pass the test.
I pressed the dotted button and felt a strong cooling sensation on my wrist. In three minutes my body felt as if it had cooled down. I would describe it as the same feeling as when you’re tending in the garden and you cool yourself down with a cold water bottle on your neck. It felt as if the Embr Wave sent cooling waves throughout my whole body. I was surprised, to say the least.
Prior to buying the Embr Wave, when I got hot flashes, I would have to rapidly wave my fan to just get some relief. Or, I would have to change into cooler clothes. Suddenly, all I have to do is press a discreet, fast-acting button. I truly was overwhelmed with happiness because time with my daughter and loved ones, which is extremely valued at this stage in my life, is usually compromised due to cumbersome hot flashes. They dictate my day and I was just so relieved to get immediate relief that actually worked.
Menopause affects my sleeping habits.
The Embr Wave had passed the initial test. I made it through the day without having to interrupt my routine due to a hot flash. But, the night is sometimes the worst.
Since starting menopause, I don’t remember the last time I got a full night’s rest. I’m often waking up in the middle of the night due to sudden bursts of warmth, or I have night sweats. It’s unbearable and I’m tired of it.
When I saw that the Embr Wave offers an All Night Sleep Mode in the companion app, I was intrigued but also skeptical. I did my normal nightly routine — reading and drinking tea — got in bed, and decided in the morning I would be the judge of its success.
I truly stuck to my word and decided in the morning because… I didn’t wake up once in the middle of the night. The Embr Wave offered cooling sensations throughout my sleep cycle, which was set to 9 hours. I got a peaceful night’s rest that wasn’t disrupted by sudden heat.
I’ll admit it, I’m a fan.
As a naturally skeptical person, I thought the first day was a fluke. The first day of using the Embr Wave exceeded my expectations. So I decided to really stick with it and revisit after another month.
During that month, I still got hot flashes that weren’t immediately cured, but I definitely wasn’t begging for coolness in the same way as before. Some nighttime hot flashes occurred, but the Embr Wave addressed them. Ultimately, it takes some time for your body to get used to this new temperature perception, which was the case for me. After about a month, I felt like my body got used to the Wave’s technology and my hot flashes became more under control. My body developed an innate response to the hot flashes with the Wave, which provided relief every time they occurred. Safe to say, I’m a skeptic-turned-believer.
The Embr Wave is worth it.
After using it for some time, I can confidently say I’m so glad I purchased the Embr Wave. It’s a discreet and fashionable device to wear. I can finally retire the fan. Most importantly, it provides relief that can actually make me enjoy this part of my life and not dread it. I get better sleep, I’m not stressed, and overall I’m a happier person to be around. I can visit my daughter and her husband and actually enjoy myself. I can tend to my garden without getting overheated. I can go about life with enjoyment. If you’re someone who is tired of hot flashes and wants to feel like yourself again, try the Embr Wave. It’s worth it.
