Filtered showerheads are the latest craze in home improvements that can help to improve your skin’s health. By removing impurities and contaminants in your water system, your skin’s natural barrier may improve to reveal nourished and healthy skin and hair. I explored the top filtered shower heads on the market: Canopy, Jolie, Afina, Hello Klean, and eskiin. Evaluated on filtration, effectiveness, ease of use, and price, which one checks the boxes to be your next Black Friday purchase?
Filtration Technology and Design
Canopy
Canopy’s filtration system utilizes three types of filtering: granular activated carbon, KDF-55, and Calcium Sulfite. The activated carbon, made from coconut shells, helps remove impurities. KDF-55 is a combination of zinc and copper that chemically reduces contaminants in the water. Lastly, Calcium Sulfite reacts with chlorine to achieve de-chlorination up to 99% effectiveness. This proactive filtration is dermatologist-recommended for its ability to help reduce impurities, promoting clear skin and healthy hair.
There is the standard filtered shower head, an ergonomic handheld option, and then a Shower System where you can purchase both in one. It’s a sleek, modern design that uplifts the aesthetic of your shower.
Jolie
Jolie Filtered Showerhead uses a similar filtration system to Canopy minus the activated carbon. The Jolie Filter contains KDF-55 and Calcium Sulfate. It’s designed to remove chlorine and heavy metals from your water. With a focus on removing chlorine, Jolie aims to alleviate irritated skin and bring back the hair and skin’s natural oils. The Jolie showerhead is a clean, modern design as well.
Eskiin
The eskiin Filtered Showerhead is built with 15 layers to filter out chlorine and heavy metals. Notable layers include: Calcium Sulfite, KDF-55, Coconut-activated carbon, and pp-cotton. Similar to activated carbon, pp-cotton absorbs dirt, dust, and impurities to leave your hair softer. The eskiin showerhead has a clunkier appearance, similar to a traditional showerhead.
Afina
The Afina A-01 Filtered Showerhead purifies your water through a process called redox, which converts contaminants into clean water. However, there is no clear explanation of what is in the proprietary blend of filtration particles. The design is smooth and shiny, but with a wider body that might not be aesthetically pleasing for every shower.
Hello Klean
The Hello Klean Showerhead 2.0 uses a KDF-55, amino acid granules, and activated carbon to remove contaminants from your water. Amino acid granules may help to keep natural oils intact while neutralizing harmful elements. This combination of ingredients works to help protect the hair from damaging metals. It has a unique design with an open middle. The appearance is trendy and minimalistic.
Convenience/Ease of Use
Both Canopy and eskiin require no handyman, but Canopy is more efficient with quick-release technology for filter replacement.
Canopy’s Filtered Showerhead and the eskiin Filtered Showerhead require little to no manual labor. To set them up, remove the existing showerhead by hand or with the wrench Canopy provided, then twist on the showerhead clockwise. It takes less than five minutes. The same goes for the handheld Canopy Showerhead, where you connect the mount to the shower pipe.
Both filters require a change every 90 days. However, eskiin says if you are more than a 1-person household, you might have to change it sooner than 90 days. The standard Canopy Filtered Showerhead uses quick-release technology to change the filter. For the handheld showerhead, you simply unscrew the faceplate and swap out the filters. The eskiin uses the same technology as the Canopy handheld showerhead. The Canopy showerheads are convenient and aren’t a hassle to upkeep. They use durable materials to maintain quality long term. Eskiin is convenient to set up, but lacks the durability of Canopy.
Jolie and Afina are easy to install, but cumbersome when replacing the filter.
Jolie showerheads come with a custom wrench that you can use to take off your old showerhead. With the tape included, wrap the threaded part of the exposed pipe 2x and tear. Twist on the Jolie until it’s snug.
To replace the Jolie filter, you have to unscrew the head from the pipe, unscrew the back cap, remove the old filter, and place the new one. Compared to the quick-release technology of the Canopy, it’s rather cumbersome for quick maintenance. You change it every 90 days.
Installing the Afina showerhead is relatively easy. First, unscrew the existing showerhead. Next, wrap the end of the pipe with plumbers tape. Then, screw on the A-01 showerhead. Lastly, tighten it with a wrench. The Afina filters must be replaced every 90 days. To replace the filter, you have to unscrew the head from the spout.
The Hello Klean Showerhead is easy to install, but only works with handheld showers.
All it takes to install the showerhead is to unscrew your existing showerhead, attach the Hello Klean one, and run the water for 30 seconds. However, the showerhead only accommodates handheld showerheads with a hose. To replace the headpiece cartridge, simply rotate the tab to pop off the faceplate. Unscrew the head from the handle to swap the handle cartridge.
Effectiveness and Results
Canopy proved to be over 90% effective for minimizing product buildup and promoting cleaner hair and nourished skin.
With a three-stage filtration system and strong water pressure, the Canopy proactively removes impurities. I took a deep dive into users’ results. For hair and scalp, 96% saw a reduction in product build-up, 91% felt hair was cleaner, and 91% noticed less dryness and breakage. As for the skin. 96% agreed skin felt cleaner, 87% felt less dryness, and 87% agreed skin felt healthier and brighter. After a few months of consistent use, you’ll achieve optimal clean hair and an improved skin barrier.
Jolie proactively purifies water and enhances cleanliness, but has a smaller absorption of contaminants.
The filtration system purifies water and enhances cleanliness. The Filtered Showerhead removes chlorine at over 85% for the lifespan of the filter. This helps with irritation and dryness caused by hard water. However, there is no activated carbon to remove impurities that would help amplify hair’s health and appearance. The Jolie is effective in nourishing the skin, but lacks the ability to achieve smoother and shinier hair. 81% had a decrease in hair shedding, but dandruff and flakiness might persist.
Eskiin’s filter works to block out 98.7% of contaminants that may cause hair and skin issues, but doesn’t last long.
The eskiin 15-layer filter removes 98.7% of contaminants, allowing for hydrated skin and hair. Eskiin says to expect results in 2-3 weeks of consistent use. However, these results are more temporary as customers have noted the pressure dropping after three weeks.
Afina achieves immediate results of softer hair and skin, but the results didn’t persist.
Customers have noted that they experienced immediate results, causing them softer hair and more nourished skin, but they felt the effects didn’t last long. It works to alleviate hard water, but not completely remove the contaminants.
The Hello Klean Showerhead works to alleviate surface level skincare problems, such as dryness and irritation.
The filtration technology of Hello Klean removes 90% of chlorine from hard water. This is effective in helping to achieve smoother hair and skin. Their consumer test trials found that 88% reported their hair and skin felt softer after one month. 78% of the respondents reported an improvement in hair dryness. Overall, the technology of the Hello Klean works to make hair more manageable and feel smoother. It lacks the ability to improve the skin barrier, with only 67% of participants observing that their skin felt more balanced.
Additional Features
Canopy offers a personalized shower experience with three stream settings and aroma diffusion.
The Canopy Filtered Showerhead goes a step further than clean hair and skin with features that create a relaxing, personalized experience. Canopy offers three stream settings, so you can curate your shower experience to your liking. Additionally, the Canopy handheld has a scalp massager attachment that invigorates the scalp to promote healthy hair growth and get rid of buildup and flakiness. Elevate the ambiance with aroma diffusion, which is included with every showerhead.
Price and Value
Canopy is a moderate price with high payoff long-term.
You can buy the handheld or the standard showerhead outright for $150. This is affordable considering the payoff you get from the optimal water pressure and filtration technology. Both showerhead options offer a showerhead and filter subscription, where a new filter comes every 90 days, that is currently on sale for $135. There is also a showerhead, filter, and aroma subscription that ships a filter and three-piece aroma kit every 90 days. This is currently on sale for $125. With Canopy you can invest in subscriptions that add value without compromising quality.
Jolie is a slightly higher price, but lacks a thorough filtration process.
For a one-time purchase, the showerhead goes for $165, which includes one filter. You can opt for the subscription, which includes filters delivered to you every 90 days for $148. Considering there is no activated carbon to absorb further impurities, you might benefit from a more affordable showerhead if you’re suffering from product buildup and dandruff.
The eskiin and Afina are affordable options, but lack longevity.
The eskiin goes for $128 for a one-time purchase that comes with a filter. A showerhead and filter subscription is available for $112, where a filter is delivered every 90 days for $33. Though this a more affordable option, after three weeks, water pressure starts to drop. You might find yourself purchasing more filters before the 90 days, especially if you’re in a 2-plus person household.
The standalone price for the Afina A-01 showerhead is $129. The subscription option is priced at $99. You get a free 7-day trial. After 7 days, you pay $99. Filters are then delivered to your door every 60 days for $29. At an affordable price, this showerhead is good for those just seeking immediate results for smoother hair. If you have more severe hard water issues, you might benefit from investing in a higher quality showerhead that effectively removes impurities long term.
The Hello Klean Showerhead is the least expensive option, but doesn’t accommodate all showers.
You can purchase the Hello Klean Showerhead outright for $67.50. There is a subscription option that includes new cartridges delivered every three months for $45. This option is $52.50. Though this is very affordable compared to the other options, it lacks adaptability and deep hard water remediation that a more expensive option might provide. It can only fit handheld showers, which is great for mobility, but not inclusive for those who prefer a standard overhead rinse. If you’re looking for a cheaper option to simply improve hair and skin texture, then this is right for you.
